re: Anniversary Scavenger Hunt tips

Starting a thread for people to post any tips for the Anniversary Scavenger Hunt quests.  Feel free to add things that might be helpful.

Getting to the after-battle area: If you need to get to Henneth Annun and Osgiliath after-battle, but haven't done the Pelennor epic quests to open the area, it is still possible to be hunter-ported or summoned there. (Let me know if you need a port.) Once there, you can tag the stables at Osgiliath and Henneth Annun and stable there from South Bree. It is also possible to travel from the Eastern Gondor Crossroads outside Osgiliath north to North Ithlien without having to do the Pelennor instances.

Although the quest to go to Henneth Annun is in the Year 1 quests, a Year 2 quest will send you there.  Talking to Sam in Rivendell about Oliphants starts an interlude instance that deposits you in Henneth Annun when it ends!

Dead Marshes: You need to go to the Update 14.2 Dead Marshes, not the area accessible from The Wastes. You access it via an instant travel horse in the Cave of Avorrim near Dol Amroth. To find the cave, ride along the road out of Dol Amroth as it continues around to the northeast. At 74.3s 67.7w, there is a break in the wall along the left side of the road. Go into the ravine, following it almost to the water. You will see a cave entrance to the left. Enter the cave, there's pretty much only one way to go. Fairly far into the cave, you will see Dorthaneth and a Swift Horse. If you haven't done it before, accept the quest from Dorthaneth. Otherwise, use the Swift Horse to reach the Dead Marshes. The recent update eliminated the level requirement for this quest, so if you can get escorted to the cave, you can get to the Dead Marshes at any level.

Moving in the Dead Marshes is a pain because you can't go through most of the tall reeds. From the camp, head west for a while until you see a way to go north. Fell-Spirits are about half-way up the map toward the east.

Year 1 Travels: Towering Monuments: Each location has 2 Remembrances for you to pick up, except the Cross-roads, which has 4. The Cross-roads in this quest is the one to the east of the after-battle Osgiliath.

Low-level characters: Some of the Scavenger Hunt quests will be challenging or impossible for low-level characters.  Although travel rules can be overridden by spending Mithril Coins, a low-level character in a high-level area attracts mobs and it may be difficult to protect it. Ports may not work, and you may not be able to be rezzed in the area. For example, you reportedly need to be 85 to be summoned to the Dead Marshes, and even if a lower-level character could get to the cave safely, it couldn't do the quest to take the horse. There is a Year 1 quest that at worst requires killing level 60 mobs in North Downs, Forochel, Misty Mountains, and Trollshaws, so fairly low-level characters could complete it with higher-level help. There is a Year 2 quest that at worst has you drink at the Forsaken Inn. So low-level characters will probably be able to do a quest for each year, but some of the quests are intended for level-cap characters.

Year 2 Travels: Tavern Crawl, Eriador: Check for some of the remembrances in back rooms of the location. Some locations have more of them. Be sure you have gotten credit for the visit before you leave. Perhaps because I was using ports to move my crafters around, some didn't get credit for a visit even though they had picked up the remembrances and drank the ale.  You may need to move to a particular spot to trigger the visit.

Year 3 Travels: Heights and Depths: This quest includes multiple stops in Moria, one in Caras Galadhon, and one in Minas Tirith. With assistance from higher-level characters, it can be done by characters that have Moria opened. Lower level characters can safely get to Minas Tirith by spending a Mithril Coin and taking the stable from South Bree. They can walk up the ramps to get to the top of Minas Tirith. It is not possible to get into Moria without completing Volume II Book 1 of the Epic. However, it is possible to enter Caras Galadhron without friend status with the Galadhrim. If you have the scavenger hunt quest, there is a second rope to the left of the entrance that will take you inside.

Going anywhere for 5 MC: I learned something today. Trying to do the scavenger hunt quest on my crafters that has to get 8 different orc clans, I was stuck. One of the clans is in Mirkwood, and my level 60s had not opened it.  There didn't seem to be any way to sneak in, but I saw a LOTRO forum post that mentioned the stable-masters collection. It turns out you can travel DIRECTLY to ANY stable for 5 Mithril Coins. Open the collections panel (C key by default), click on the stable-master symbol (4th on the left). It brings up a map showing stable masters and indicating which you've discovered. Click on the stable you want to go to, and click travel. For 5 MC, it seems like you can go anywhere, whether or not you're normally allowed to go there.

Year 4 Travels: Orc Clans: The hardest orcs to get are the Burzathrang in Mirkwood near Thangulhad. Using the stable-masters collection, you can travel directly there even if you are below level and haven't opened Mirkwood. There are qualifying orcs right outside the entrance. Other orcs are sometimes in multiple locations. Mouse over the mob to be sure they qualify for the quest, since some don't although they have the right name. Here's where I found them:

Tarkrip 21.8w 55.2w off the road from Bree to Trestlebridge

Ongburz 8.6s 55.1w on the way into Fornost in North Downs

Blogmal 6.7s 54.4w farther inside Fornost in North Downs

Krahjarn 2.8n 27.9w Malenhad Angmar

Ghash-hai 11.3s 107.1w Moria Redhorn Lodes West of Orc Watch

White Hand 11.5s 105.5w Moria Redhorn Lodes (White Hands in Lone Lands don't qualify)

Globsnaga 12.5s 100.8w Moria Redhorn Lodes

The Year 5 scavenger hunts are getting more complicated. It took more effort to get my level 60 crafters through them.

Reflecting Pools: Some people have worked out complicated schemes to get lower-level characters to high-level destinations. One way involves (re)doing a quest instance using one of the Reflecting Pools https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Reflecting_Pool. In some cases, after completing a particular quest instance, it deposits you in a useful location. The idea is for a higher-level character to start the instance in a fellowship with the lower-level character, which allows the lower level character to get to the exit spot. It is necessary to travel to the appropriate reflecting pool to enter the instance, but sometimes that's easier than getting to the ultimate destination.

Here are a couple threads in the forums from people trying to do the scavenger hunts on lower-level characters:

https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?653504-Scavenger-Hunt-Tips-for-under-level-getting-around-Middle-earth-with-a-guide-and-MC

https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?653826-Year-5-guides-and-info-(links)

Year 5 Tales: Merry: This was the easiest option for lower-level characters, but it still had significant challenges. It requires visiting Dunharrow, Fangorn, Flooded Isengard, and Minas Tirith after the battle. It was necessary to use the reflecting pool tricks in the second link above. One sequence used the housing broker to get to Dol Amroth, then using the reflecting pool there to get to Dunharrow for one objective. The Dunharrow reflecting pool gets you to Woodhurst, and by going through the town you can safely get into Fangorn. Once there, however, it's a long dangerous ride to the northwest corner for the objective, and then back to the Huorn that will take you to Isengard. Using a mount speed boost, I was able to outrun the mobs that aggroed. For the second sequence, if you don't want to bother with the trick to go through Henneth Annun to Aragorn's Pavilion, you can spend 2 MC for South Bree->Osgiliath->Aragorn's Pavilion. It is safe to do the objective by the pavilion, then ride to Minas Tirith for the last one. The other objectives are in low-level areas.

Year 6 Trifles: Creatures Great & Small: This quest has you /pat a variety of animals. Note that they must be a particular kind of NPC. Mobs don't count. All except the goat can be found in low-level areas, some at multiple locations. Low-level characters can safely reach the goat in Morlad in West Gondor. You can get to Dol Amroth with the trick of going through the Cape of Belfalas Housing Broker in Bree.  Pick a neighborhood and a house (Cypress Road is near the exit you want) and click Tour House to travel there. Head north out of the housing area, Once outside, there is an instant travel horse to Dol Amroth. From the Dol Amroth stable-master, you can get a ride to Morlad for 1 MC. From the Morlad stable-master, follow the road to the right and you'll see a couple goats on the right. Here is a link to a guide with locations for the other animals:

It turns out, I was able to do the Year 7 Tales: Legolas scavenger hunt on my crafters (with help, of course). The quest text said the orcs had to be in a Helm's Deep Epic Battle (which requires the Helm's Deep expansion which I don't have on my crafters). Fortunately, orcs in The Defence of Minas Tirith Epic Battle count, and that one can be done by anyone (no requirement for VIP or quest pack). Not only that, it offers the possibility of slaying a Mumak, which is also needed. Otherwise, they used some of the same travel tricks and spent Mithril Coins to get to high-level areas.

Year 7 Tales: Legolas: Mumak and "Helm's Deep Epic Battle" orcs. Use the Defence of Minas Tirith Epic Battle. (If you don't have the Helm's Deep expansion pack, you can't start it from the Epic Battles panel, but you can still start it from the Instance Finder.) Start it and head to the catapult above the wall. You will see the orcs count up, probably completing before the side quest. If you get Beasts of Harad as the first side quest, shoot one with the catapult. Assuming you have the orcs you need, exit the instance. If you get a different side quest, exit the battle and start it again. (You will need to start a different instance in between to reset it.) There are three possible side quests, so it may take a few tries. This battle can be done with 1, 2, or 3 and works the same as far as this is concerned.

Year 7 Tales: Legolas: Nazgul vs. Seagull. For the Nazgul, there is an object on the ground you have to click. For the Pelargir seagull, you just need to be on the pier. You may hear a click sound when you enter the correct area.

This week, Year 8 Tales: Gimli held promise, except for the task requiring characters to pick up remembrances across East Rohan from the East Wall almost to the Eaves of Fangorn. Year 8 Travels: Tombs and Haunts looked harder because it required visiting high level places and collecting remembrances. However, there are enough remembrances in low-level places to make it possible.

Year 8 Travels: Tombs and Haunts: There are 3 remembrances in Hautham and 4 in each other the other 4 spots in the Barrow Downs, so that gives you 19/22. You can use the Dol Amroth reflecting pool to get to Dunharrow. There are mobs that will attack you on the way to the Dark Door to the Paths of the Dead, but you can use an escort or outrun them. There is a remembrance just inside you can pick up before you get to any mobs. That left only two remembrances to get from Lhe Colvarn. It has level 63-65 mobs, which my level 60 crafters were able to defeat themselves to get the last remembrances. Level 60 mobs can be summoned into East Rohan, including inside the Ancient Tomb, and it was just necessary to visit it to complete the quest. If you do summon into some locations, be sure you walk close to the entrance so it recognizes that you did visit it.

Once again, it was a question of which quest my crafters could manage. Year 9 tales: Gandalf required running the Ford of Bruinen skirmish, but since they aren't VIPs, they don't have that. Year 9 Trifles:Up for a Challenge was feasible with a lot of help, but would have required a substantial force to defeat mobs in Tarlang's Crown and Limlight Gorge.

Year 9 Travels: Middle-earth Curiosities: This one ended up being possible with only a couple problems. The most difficult spots were two locations near Aldburg in West Rohan. Getting to Aldburg was just 1 MC each from South Bree. You need to visit a Squirrel Village and a Peculiar Home, both to the east of the entrance to Aldburg. Fortunately, there are enough extra remembrances so it isn't necessary to stop at the Squirrel Village. It was important to work out the route through the trees, up the hill, through the squirrels, down across the river, through more trees, then into the Peculiar Home. Using a Mount Speed boost let me stay ahead of the many mobs and survive a few hits. The other potentially difficult spot, the Rabbit cave across the river from Stangard, was someplace my level 60 crafters could be summoned. The rest of the spots were in low-level areas. One of the rewards this week is Erebrandir's Other Horseshoe. image

Next week will be the final quests for this year.

Thankfully, there was an easy quest that my crafters could do for the final week scavenger hunt. It was necessary to defeat 10 each of 6 kinds of mobs, but there were relatively low-level versions of all of them.

Year 10 Trifles: Enormous Beasts: Huorns can be found in the Old Forest. Drakes in Ram Duath on the road from North Downs to Angmar. Gorthorog and Trolls in Maethad in Angmar. Mammoths and Giants around Giant Halls in Misty Mountains. Stone-trolls north of Thorenhad in Trollshaws.

Scrap Paper: To find the last reward, you need to know the characters from Scrap Paper you got from the first 9 years as well as the 10th. If you didn't save the earlier Scrap Papers, the 9 characters in order were: . , . 5 5 8 3 7 2

Note that this is the last scavenger hunt quest for this year, but all will be available until July 13.

I was able to get my level 60 crafters through at least one quest for each year, using the tricks and Mithril Coins mentioned in earlier posts. Even lower level characters can probably do them, perhaps with more assistance. If you think you'd like to do them and need help, let me know.
